BRENDA SMITH MYLES Ph.D.
The Hidden Curriculum
This session will highlight the hidden curriculum which are the
unwritten rules that occur in everyday situations at home, school, and
in the community. Neurotypical children learn these unstated rules and
social customs of society with little effort There is a group of
individuals with high cognitive and language abilities who do not see
the hidden curriculum - children and youth with high functioning
autism, PDD-NOS, Asperger Syndrome and other related disorders such as
nonverbal learning disability, ADD, and ADHD. Hidden curriculum errors
can result in social errors and isolation from peers. Following a
presentation on the hidden curriculum and related examples, strategies
to teach the hidden curriculum will be overviewed. In addition, the
cycle of tantrums, rage, and meltdowns will be highlighted.
Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the
Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas where she
co-directs a graduate program in Asperger Syndrome and autism. The
recipient of the 2004 Autism Society of America’s Outstanding
Professional Award, she has written numerous articles and books on
Asperger Syndrome and autism including Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns (with Southwick) and Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success
(with Adreon), the winner of the Autism Society of America’s
Outstanding Literary Work. Myles is the Vice President of the Council
for Exceptional Children’s Developmental Disabilities Division and is
on the executive boards of several organizations, including the
Organization for Autism Research and Maap Services Inc.

CATHERINE FAHERTY
Finding Meaning: Laying the Groundwork for
Future Self-Advocacy
Catherine Faherty's presentation will begin by stressing the importance
of helping persons with ASD make sense out of the world around them.
She suggests that Structured Teaching strategies, as taught by TEACCH,
are pivotal to clarifying the meaning of everyday life. She will
introduce a sampling of Structured Teaching strategies and clarify them
from a TEACCH perspective. This information is valid for all children
and adults with autism, no matter their level of functioning.
The day will continue with Ms. Faherty suggesting ways to specifically
help verbal children and teenagers learn about having ASD. She will
highlight important communication skills that are necessary to develop
for future self-advocacy, giving examples of visually structured
communication strategies which promote effective communication between
those with ASD and their neurotypical family, friends, and teachers.
Catherine Faherty, teacher, TEACCH therapist, and trainer, is the author of the book Asperger’s... What Does It Mean To Me?
, which was written to help children and youth with ASD with
self-understanding; and to promote mutual understanding amongst
important people in their lives. It includes a wealth of strategies for
parents and teachers. It can be read in English, Greek, Swedish,
Japanese, French, Spanish, and Danish.
At age thirteen, when working at a summer day camp for handicapped
children, Catherine knew immediately that this would be her life's
work. Her early education and training was at Eastern Michigan
University, where in addition to majoring in general and special
education, she worked daily on campus in the lab school for exceptional
children. After several years teaching typically developing children as
well as children with learning differences, she became affiliated with
the TEACCH Program in 1985, first as a classroom teacher and later as a
psychoeducational therapist-trainer at the Asheville TEACCH Center, one
of the nine regional centers of the TEACCH program through the
University of North Carolina. There she participates on weekly
diagnostic evaluations; works with child ren and adults, and their
families; consults to classrooms; runs social groups for adults; and is
a TEACCH trainer nationally and internationally. She has written
manuals used in trainings, developed several training models, and has
written a book for children with ASD and their parents and teachers.
Asperger’s... What Does It Mean To Me?
features a wealth of structured teaching strategies, and provides
workbook pages for verbal children and youth with ASD to help build
selfknowledge, understanding, and self-esteem. She is currently
completing her next book. Catherine, a first generation Greek-American,
supports the Autism Society in Greece by training parents and
professionals in Greece, and raising money to translate and publish
books in Greek. As a member of Carol Gray's "Team Social Stories, she
enjoys promoting mutual understanding by training professionals and
families in the use of Social Stories.
Friday, May 16 3:15 pm—4:30 pm
JOHN SIMPSON
One Year of Employment: Problems and How to Overcome Them
John is a young man with Asperger Syndrome who attended mainstream
secondary school until he became mentally unwell at the age of just
sixteen. He was then admitted to an in-patient psychiatric unit for six
months. During this time he received a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome
along with his mental health difficulties. Becoming more self aware and
gaining insight and understanding into his AS as well as the mental
health problems have been key for John’s road to well being. This road
took him into college and out again and into a job and out again before
finding employment that suits him. John now works part time in a
residential home for adults with learning difficulties and autism. Here
he has learned more about himself and has been a great resource for
staff colleagues to help them understand their residents better.
Living with an autistic spectrum disorder continues to be a battle at
times for John. In this talk he will share something of the need to
work towards short term goals in a very gradual and step by step
approach. He will also share the problems as well as the success
stories of his current employment. John does have some longer term
goals but has difficulty working out how he can reach them and this
ongoing need for support in a range of areas of life is something John
will explore through his talk.
John lives at home with his Mum and Dad and younger brother.
