Essential Elements of Positive Practice, and Visual Strategies for Teaching Children to Read
Morning Session: Essential Elements of Positive Practice
In this workshop, Leslie Broun discusses key elements essential in creating a positive school experience for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Important considerations include the neurology of autism and its effects on learning, sensory sensitivities and environmental supports, learning style, academic skill development and appropriate teaching strategies, effective home/school communication, as well as the creation of meaningful Individual Education or Program Plans. Participants will receive practical information that can have a direct and immediate usefulness to the classroom experience of both instructors and students.
Afternoon Session: Literacy Skill Development for Students with Special Learning Needs
The content of this workshop is geared to students of any age who are in the process of learning to read or who are working towards expanding their skills. The application of sight vocabulary to sentence construction and comprehension skill development are emphasized. Participants will receive practical strategies that are easy to implement and can effectively facilitate literacy skill development for many students with ASD and/or other developmental disabilities.
Leslie Broun has taken on a variety of roles in her work with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, including working for the Peel District School Board for over twenty years as the teacher of self-contained program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, as an ASD Itinerant Resource Teacher for students in mainstream settings and as the board consultant for ASD. In 2007, Leslie was a member of the cross-ministerial ASD Reference Group that helped formulate new policy for students with ASD in the province of Ontario. For six years she served on the Board of Directors of Autism Ontario and in 2008 received the Gerry Bloomfield Award for excellence in professional service. As well as having worked for both the Ministry of Education and the Geneva Centre for Autism, she has also been a teaching instructor and presenter at workshops and conferences across Canada and internationally. Her primary professional focuses have been the development of practical and effective learning strategies and materials for teaching academic skills to students with ASD and other developmental disabilities, as well as the development of perspectives on inclusion, curriculum modification and the application of the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis in planning and programming for students.

- Identify the components of a comprehensive transition plan.
- Define the multiple constituent groups whose needs are to be meet in the employment development process.
- Discuss the important of co-worker training in employment maintenance.
- Describe the individually determined components of an assessment of quality of life.

In this seminar, healthcare professionals, educators, and parents will learn characteristics about each sensory system, signs/symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder, and practical strategies for application in children’s daily routines, along with current research to support sensory processing practices. In addition, attendees will learn how to apply sensorimotor activities, as described in "Learn to Move, Move to Learn" (AAPC 2004), to both school and home settings. This unique approach is geared toward serving young children in an inclusive environment with a transdisciplinary approach. The sensorimotor groups are planned to provide experiences to stimulate and integrate the underlying sensory systems in the human body, which incorporate activities and experiences using motor, cognitive, communication and social skills to enhance learning. Adaptations will be discussed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Developmental Delay. Hands on activities will enrich the learning process for participants. Attendees will learn skills and strategies they can immediately use in their classroom and home settings.
